Speeding – A Primary Cause of Motor Vehicle Collisions

Each year since 1990, more than six million car accidents are reported to police nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Unfortunately, at least three million of those accidents involve injuries to one or more people. No forms of transportation are more dangerous than cars, trucks and motorcycles.

In fact, automobile collisions are the number one cause of accidental death in this country. One in three Americans will be involved in at least one car wreck which results in injury to a driver or passenger during their lifetime. In the State of Georgia alone, there were 1,493 traffic fatalities in 2008, according to data collected by the NHTSA.

Speeding is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to traffic accidents in the United States. The economic cost to society of speeding-related crashes is estimated by NHTSA to be $28.0 billion per year. In 1999, speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes, and 12,628 lives were lost in speeding-related crashes. Most people simply under appreciate the risks associated with driving an automobile too fast.

Under Georgia law, all motorists are required to drive at a safe speed. O.C.G.A. § 40-6-180 ("No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards than existing."). Speeding greatly increases the chance of being involved in an accident, as driver reaction time is drastically reduced and the law of physics dictate that the higher the speed at impact, the more severe the damage and resulting injury.
